Another sold-out awards night at Quentin Tarantinos New Beverly Cinema! Filmmaker Jen McGowan picked up the Golden undies along with the fest's grand prize of $1,000 for her film Touch. UK director Deborah Haywood’s black comedy SIS came in second, winning $500. Leo Curbelo’s immigrant drama Utopia Lies at the Horizon scored the Bronze trophy and $250 in cash.

The newly re-vamped box[ur]shorts Best Student Film award went to David Beglin from Art Center College of Design for his movie Emma. The prize is valued at $18,000 in sponsored goods and services which Beglin can use towards his next film. The jury of the 5th box[ur]shorts Film Festival consisted of producer Cookie Carosella (Easier With Practice), actress Nae (White on Rice, Letters from Iwo Jima), last year’s festival winner David Green (Meldtown) and two audience jury groups from the USA and Poland. The festival also announced the box[ur]shorts Audience Choice award that had been voted best during 2010: It went to Spain-based filmmaker Jean-Julien Collette for his comedy E Finita La Commedia.

"To my surprise, a lot of dramas made it among the finalist films,” festival director Giacun Caduff mentioned at the awards night. In contrast to last year’s light comedy lineup, the finalist movies of the 5th festival were marked by strong messages, much appreciated by the audience. Notable films include Anna Thommens documentary Second Me about a Swiss man who immerses into the virtual world of Second Life after a personal burnout. Or, Luca Escrivas Prelude in e-Minor, the poetic journey of a disabled piano player. Furthermore, audiences loved Le Dîner by French director Cécile Vernant who was represented at the awards night by actress Julie Dray.

Other highlights included the evening's co-hosts, Torin C. Caffrey and Minchi who -  both dressed in boxer shorts and suspenders - got people hyped up for the night. The festival also displayed two of their new movie jukeboxes during the event, ready to be tested by the guests when they weren't too busy networking or enjoying the sponsored reception.
