Meltdown, a comedy from director David Green, picked up the Golden box[ur]shorts trophy. Nash Edgerton’s Spider came in second and UCLA MFA director Joaquin Baldwin’s animated short Sebastian’s Voodoo took home both the Bronze box[ur]shorts™ trophy as well as the Best Student Film award.

The 11 films screened at the awards nights are the top selection for 2010 from 50 shorts that will play during the upcoming competition. Other notable films from this season include Patrick Meury’s stylistic Swiss music video John Q. Public, which portrays a day in the life of a banker; Chris Wiatt’s UK comedy How to Cope with Rejection where a guy goes on to hire a Ninja to eliminate his ex-girlfriend’s new lover; and U.S. director Mediha Sandhu’s short Arranged, which explores the pros and cons of an arranged marriage.
“All films are now available to be viewed immediately in the festival’s movie jukeboxes as well as online where we just went live with an exciting new beta video portal,” says Giacun Caduff, the festival director. (click here)

Other awards night highlights included a give-away of an iPod Touch, the eclectic host, MC Torin C. Caffrey, two male models dressed in box[ur]shorts undies and a special reception performance of the Los Angeles indie band Derde Verde. Yuuki Nae and the lead actors of White on Rice, Hiroshi Watanabe & Mio Takada, were among the VIP attendees. Inside the New Beverly Cinema, guests could network to a catchy tune, enjoy a glass of Little Penguin wine and of course eat unlimited amounts of Frey chocolate from the festival director Caduff’s native Switzerland.
